Recently Apple has changed the way to force restart or do a hard reset an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, as stated in a recent support document. While your iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus is rebooting this method requires pressing and holding both the Sleep/Wake along with the Volume Down buttons for a minimum of 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears, to restart an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus requires three steps.
- Press and release the Volume Up button quickly.
- Press and release the Volume Down button quickly.
- Press and hold the Side button (also referred as power) until you the Apple logo appears.
On an iPhone 6s and earlier versions: For at least 10 seconds, press and hold both the Home and the Top (or Side) buttons until you the Apple logo appears.
These changes have been made because, on iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button and one of the Volume buttons will activate the Emergency SOS feature.
Remember that Apple now referred the Sleep/Wake button as the Side button as of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X.
If your device still won’t turn on or start up
For up to one hour plug in your iPhone and let it charge.
You’ll see the charging screen after a few minutes. Within an hour if you don’t see the charging screen or you’re seeing the connect to power screen, check the USB cable, jack, along with the power adapter. Ensure that everything is plugged in firmly, no debris, and there is no damage. You may want to try a different power adapter or USB cable.
What do you do if a restart doesn’t work? Use Force Restart to enter DFU mode
DFU is abbreviated for Device Firmware Update. This mode will tell the iPhone to interact with iTunes without the operating system loading. If your iPhone’s operating system is in a failure state, where you can’t do anything with your iPhone and it’s completely unresponsive, entering DFU mode should restore it. This process will remove everything you had on your iPhone, but sometimes it’s the only solution to bring your iPhone back to life.
